Job Description

The primary responsibility for this position is teaching undergraduate students. This position requires classroom and/or online instruction in the discipline. The instructor must be knowledgeable in the discipline and must provide high quality instruction. The instructor must have demonstrated knowledge and integration of appropriate practices in teaching to different learning styles. This position requires the individual to have strong skills in written and oral communication, problem-solving, critical thinking, computer use including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and/or other required programs, Blackboard, and Owens email. The individual must be able to integrate a variety of methodologies to facilitate student learning, understand the needs of community college students, manage a classroom including organizing and presenting material, designing lessons and activities, monitoring student behavior and performance, follow instructions and meet deadlines, recognize students’ strengths and weaknesses and provide feedback, and evaluate student work fairly using Department guidelines. Essential functions include developing syllabi, preparing lesson plans, conducting classes, following department guidelines, meeting classes on scheduled dates and times, respecting Owens Community College Standards for Web Instruction if teaching online, using appropriate classroom management techniques and technology, effective communication using the College’s course management system and email, timely response to student inquiries, creating and evaluating assignments and grades, maintaining accurate records of attendance and grades, reporting grades and attendance, administering course evaluations, attending department and college workshops and meetings, participating in student learning assessment activities, performing other departmental duties, and supporting the College’s mission, vision, and core values. Other characteristics required include embodiment of Owens Core Values, enthusiasm for teaching, excellent interpersonal skills, strong organizational skills, patience, and flexibility. Minimum education required is a Master’s degree in Anthropology or a closely related field with at least 18 credit hours of graduate-level coursework in Anthropology. Graduate degree in Sociology may be considered with sufficient work and training in Anthropology.
