Assistant Director and Emerging Artist Observership Announcing Opportunities for Emerging Theatre Artists! Assistant Director and Emerging Artist Observership Positions Accepting Applicants Now! The Huntington is thrilled to announce new positions available for Assistant Directors and Emerging Observing Artists. These paid positions give early, emerging and mid-career artists the opportunity to collaborate with and observe top-tier creative teams at a leading regional theatre. This program continues our commitment to providing career opportunities for the ever-growing community of Boston-based artists. This season’s productions include: ● Fun Home by Jeanine Tesori (music) and by Lisa Kron (book and lyrics) About the Emerging Artist Observership Program: Our Emerging Artist Observership program is tailor-made for early-career theatre artists seeking an immersive experience in a professional rehearsal process. Gain invaluable insights as you observe the development of new and revitalized plays in captivating productions. This opportunity promises to inspire and educate artists pursuing directing, acting, playwrighting, producing, stage management, and design. Prerequisites:

  • An interest in theatre
  • 18+ years old
30 hours* of observation, including: Context meeting and on-boarding with the Huntington Team and stage management Attendance at First Rehearsal and Meet & Greet (4 hours) Observing in staging rehearsals (14 hours) 45-minute meeting with a member of the creative team Attendance at one tech rehearsal (4 hours) Attendance at one preview and production meeting (4 hours) Join us for Opening Night celebrations 3 hours at the observer's discretion (prep work/research/script reading, etc) Observers may engage beyond 30 hours should they choose; however the fee will not reflect those additional hours Compensation: $500 stipend for the 30 hours of work About the Assistant Director Program: For emerging and mid-career directors, our Assistant Director program offers a seat at the table with our world class creative teams, collaborating closely with directors, designers, and the actors throughout the production process . Differing from the observerships, assistant directors will be taking active roles with responsibilities assigned by the director and producers. The ideal candidate is excited to elevate their craft and create meaningful professional relationships through this process. Prerequisites :
  • Some directing experience (2 full productions or at least 4 staged readings)
  • Day time availability during the week and on weekends
  • Evening availability for tech and previews
Responsibilities Notetaking and email correspondence with and on behalf of the director Dramaturgical support for the rehearsal process in collaboration with the Huntington’s literary team Run small group rehearsals and scene work as requested by the director Support the onstage cast and understudies with line-running and memorization Hone directing craft by leading understudy cast and serving as their advocate and liaison during the rehearsal process Run understudy rehearsals through opening week Rehearsal and production meeting hours typically vary between 9 am to 7 pm, with scheduled days off on Monday Tech and preview schedules may run 12pm-10pm but may vary based on the needs of the production As part of our commitment to Boston artists, priority will be given to local directors. Housing and travel support will not be provided.
