Work Designation. Depending on your location within the continental US, this role may be hybrid or remote.

  • If you live within 50 miles of the Aflac offices located in Columbus, GA or Columbia, SC, this role will be hybrid. This means you will be expected to work in the office for at least 60% of the work week. You will work from your home (within the continental US) for the remaining portion of the work week. Details of this schedule will be discussed with your leadership. 
  • If you live more than 50 miles from the Aflac offices located in Columbus, GA or Columbia, SC, this role will be remote. This means you will be expected to work from your home, within the continental US. If the role is remote, there may be occasions that you are requested to come to the office based on business need. Any requests to come to the office would be communicated with you in advance.

What does it take to be successful in this role?

• Advanced group health underwriting knowledge, preferably in the group voluntary benefits space

 

• Strong math skills

 

• Proficiency and experience using Microsoft Office suite software

 

Education & Experience Required

• Bachelor's Degree in a related field

•4-6 years of professional group underwriting experience in a healthcare or financial services environment

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience

 

Education & Experience Preferred

• Completion of CLU, LOMA, HIAA or other insurance related courses

 

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

• Using established underwriting criteria and rating methodologies, analyzes risk and financial data to underwrite new business opportunities for mid-sized groups and other cases

 

• Underwrites mid-sized yearly renewals of group cases based on thorough analysis of the group’s financial condition, participation percentage, type of industry, participating employee demographics, and past claim experience

 

• Communicates with brokers or clients to discuss and/or obtain case detail pertinent to decision making process; considers the underwriting decisions impact on profitability of the account, product line and company; follows all applicable group regulations and works in support of Aflac Group’s business goals

 

• May develop retention illustrations to show areas of cost and expenses on some cases; communicates with sales operations/account relations and producers to discuss and negotiate underwriting offers and to ensure understanding of proposal creation

 

• Collaborates with sales team to develop talking points and strategies to be used with the customer and broker regarding rate negotiation, benefit plan options and other issues to optimize retention, growth and profit

 

• Communicates with sales, administration and claims to assess the rating and administrative impact or benefit and plan changes; discusses key business opportunities with senior management as requested

 

• Coordinates with other departments to ensure the accuracy and consistency of account reporting; is instrumental in managing and attaining market specific financial goals; participates in data analysis and reporting projects

 

• Assists with case studies and product line review; provides explanation and interpretations within area of expertise; completes ad-hoc projects and reporting

 

• Performs related duties as required

 

Total Rewards

The salary range for this job is $65,000 - $85,000. This range is specific to the job and salary offers consider a wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including, but not limited to: education, experience, licensure, certifications, geographic location, and peer compensation. The range has been created in good faith based on information known to Aflac at the time of the posting.

 

At Aflac, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for the role to allow for future and continued salary growth, and compensation decisions are dependent on the circumstances of each case. This salary range does not include any potential incentive pay or benefits, however, such information will be provided separately when appropriate.
